With dark evenings and chilly weather setting in, it can be difficult to muster the motivation to get out for a run. Safety can be an issue on duller days, and unpredictable weather can make the going tougher and unstable. Clever layering, practical basics and be-seen accessories can help you to stay safe and snug whether you’re pounding the pavement or hitting the trail.

Cap

  • Ensure that the cap covers your head, including your ears, to trap heat in and protect your head from changing temperatures.
  • A polyester or elastane material blend will safeguard your head from strong winds with the lightweight material ensuring snug fit.

Gloves

  • Running during the chilly months without adequate protection can cause dryness and flakiness of the skin.
  • Use gloves, especially those with spandex material on the index and middle finger that increases grip support. Or, use gloves come with special thumb pad for easy access to handle touch screens.

Base Layer

  • Layering is a key element of the training gear helping you stay warm. The most vital layer is the layer in contact with the skin.
  • Polyester and polyacrylate blend material removes any sweat or moisture and does not cause any chafing.
  • A crew neck t-shirt is one of the best design options for the base layer.

Mid layer

  • Wearing a spandex blend material allows for a complete array of motion besides keeping you dry and cool between the base layer and the jacket.
  • A jacket with a mesh side panel and zipper will allow for extra ventilation without letting go of body heat.
  • A turtle neck design is a great option that will protect your neck and trap body heat.

Jacket

  • This is the most important gear and needs to shield the body against winds and occasional rains.
  • Most jackets come with an added set of hand warmers, for increased protection on top of your gloves.
  • A jacket with a turtle neck and a hood, besides trapping body heat, will provide additional protection over above the cap.

Wind pants

  • After insulating the skin with leggings, a polyester blend material of wind pants will help trap body heat.

Wool socks

  • Socks should be thick enough to give a feel free of moisture and yet not be unwieldy to not fit into your running shoes.
